You may have taken a great deal of time choosing your campervan as of course it is a huge investment. Doing the same with insurance may help ensure that your campervan cover is appropriate for your needs.

Campervan insurance may be something of a specialist field, so it may make sense to use a campervan insurance specialist. In fact, you may find that general car insurers just don’t offer it. The internet typically is a useful place to find the specialist providers who can.

Why won’t car insurance provide the protection I need?

The basics of campervan insurance are very similar to those for a car. Typically there are options for fully comprehensive, Third Party, Fire and Theft for example.

However there are a number of significant differences though, some of which are based on the fact that your campervan also provides your accommodation.

Holidays

Typically campervan insurance is based on the assumption that your van will be used mainly for things like holidays. You may therefore find that many providers of insurance may not cover a campervan or motor home for regular use commuting to and from work for example, as the risks are entirely different.

Fixtures and fittings

Typically a campervan will contain a lot in the way of fittings and fixtures to make it habitable. It usually also has luxuries in it like a TV, for example. You are also likely to keep more personal belongings in you campervan. All of these things may make it more of a target for thieves so they may all need to be insured.

Breakdowns

If you were to have a breakdown, you will not only have lost your mode of transport but also your holiday accommodation. Having campervan breakdown cover, which can in some instances also provide alternative accommodation to allow you to continue your holiday, may be a good idea.

Discounts

You may find that a few of the specialist providers of campervan cover may provide discounted premiums if you can demonstrate that you are a careful and responsible owner by:

l adding security measures to your campervan. Some providers may ask that you do have certain amounts of security on your campervan before you can take out insurance.

l parking your vehicle in a secure and approved parking area when not in use;

l making yourself a member of a caravan club recognised in the UK.

Home and abroad

When you arrange your campervan cover it may be worth remembering to check the terms and conditions for what, continental cover you may need for travel outside of the UK.
